ANNAPOLIS VALLEY WORK CENTRE
The Annapolis Valley Work Centre (AVWC) is sponsored by, and is the core program of, PeopleWorx Society.
Primarily funded by the Nova Scotia Department of Community Services and the
Government of Canada, AVWC also supports programs through the sale of in-house goods and services.
AVWC serves adults living in West Hants, Kings and Annapolis County who have identified barriers to obtaining and maintaining employment.
Programs are designed to meet the unique needs of each individual.
Program Admission
Candidates for the program may be referred by a community-service organization or professional, or may apply on their own. Applicants must be 18 years or older.
Program Content
On admission to the program, individuals are aided in identifying their personal and work-related goals. A variety of methods are used to achieve these goals, including:
Workshops
Classroom instruction
Video presentations
Individual counselling
On-the-job experience
Hands-on learning
Offered in module format, the program includes upgrading, personal and social development, vocational skills, individual counselling and job development.
Existing skills, goals and rate of progress determine the length of each person’s program; however, the standard program is approximately 27 weeks.
Those requiring literacy or academic upgrading in order to be successful in the core program, may take part in a literacy module.
Modules
Train I
The first module of the program is a nine-week foundation and assessment period. It includes upgrading, social and general work skills with emphasis on personal development, as well as one of the following work options:
Woodworking Shop / Career in Construction
Basic Office Skills
Retail Merchandising / Customer Service
Food Service
During this module, trainees will develop personal action plans reflecting their goals.
Train II
The second nine-week module focuses on the work option. Trainees learn and practice their skills in a simulated work environment (i.e. Shop, Kitchen, etc.) All tools and supplies are provided by the centre.
In addition to the work option, the Train II module also includes a combination of the following elements:
Educational Development
- Educational upgrading/Preparation for the GED exam
- Introduction to computers
Personal Development
- Identifying and developing appropriate work behaviors
- Problem solving
- Interpersonal skills
- Teamwork skills
Job Development
- Career Decision making
- Skills identification
- Interview skills
- Resume and cover letter writing
- Job search strategies
- Portfolio development (PLAR)
Counselling
- Individual guidance and support ensures program participants are able to proceed at their own pace and address their personal goals.
Transition
A community work placement of up to five days per week
The practice of skills gained during the Train I & II modules
Host employers provide training, guidance, experience and future references
Program Completion
On completion of the program, each participant will receive a certificate of program completion. They will also have an updated and professionally prepared resume to assist them in pursuing future goals.
Expense Allowance
Program participants receive up to $8 per day to off-set costs associated with attending the program. Allowances are based on attendance.
Information Sessions
Information sessions are held at the centre every second Wednesday. An excellent way for you to learn more about centre programs and facilities, these sessions also provide those interested in attending an opportunity to complete an application.
