Past

The Career Resource Centre (CRC) opened November 30th, 1998 at the former Harvey’s Restaurant location on Main St. in Kentville. For two years prior to 1998 Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) met to discuss, plan and create the CRC, a results-based partnership involving many community partners (representing employment, education, and entrepreneurial interests) committed to the following objectives:

  • To establish and encourage community economic development by fostering partnership

  • To provide the unemployed residents of Kings County with the employment, education and entrepreneurial resources and services required to establish a career path, secure employment, maintain employment, advance in the workplace, start a business or assist with resources that will help with employment barriers


Present

The CRC is:

Accommodating - the atmosphere is encouraging and non-threatening.
Client-Centered - the CRC customizes its resources and services to meet the needs of its clients, and seeks to continually adapt to meet the changing needs of the community it serves.
Flexible - the staff of the CRC endeavor at all times to meet the needs of Kings County residents.
Holistic - the CRC endeavors to attract additional partners who can provide services and expertise which will enable the Centre to address the full range of a client’s needs.
Inclusive - the services and resources of the CRC are available to All Kings County residents who wish to use them for the purposes for which they were intended.
Proactive - the sponsor, partners and staff actively promote the Centre within the community through an on-going marketing campaign.
Seamless - the CRC and it’s partners are able to offer, given the broad spectrum of services and resources, a seamless delivery of employment, education, and entrepreneurship programs and services under one roof.
Self-Directed - the use of the Centre’s resources and services is self-directed which is in keeping with the principles of adult learning and discovery.

Vision
The Career Resource Centre is recognized as the nucleus of career resources and services for Kings County.

Mission
“to enhance the career choices of residents of Kings County by providing self-directed resources and services in a supportive environment”.


Staff as of September 2011 

  • Manager – Phil Long
    Under the direction of the CRC sponsor, the manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the CRC including management/administration, programs/services, and advertising/public relations.

 

  • Information Technology Specialist – Mike Rueff
    The IT specialist is responsible to assist the CRC with their computer needs and delivery of services to residents of Kings County.

 

  • Employment Specialists - Rene Keddy, Mary Beth Floyd and Melissa Allen
    Under the direction of the CRC manager, the employment specialists are responsible to assist residents of Kings County to access the CRC resources and services and to provide information on community resources available.

 

  • Administrative Assistant – Sandra Martin
    Under the direction of the CRC manager, the receptionist is responsible for providing front-end reception duties to the clients, CRC. Sandra also provides administrative support to the CRC.

 

  • Case Management Specialist - Bonnie Harnett
    Under the direction of the CRC Manager, the case management specialist offers services to individuals who are seeking guidance and assistance in meeting their employment needs.

 

  • Employment Counsellors - Helen Carter and Patrick Brush
    Under the direction of the CRC Manager, the employment counsellors offer services to individuals who are seeking guidance and assistance in meeting their employment needs and creating a return to work action plan. 

Growth

Clients of the Centre are asked to register when they visit. From the tabulated statistics and call back evaluation survey results we learn how we can improve our service delivery, resource development and community capacity building.

The CRC has grown. In our first month of operation in 1998 we assisted 60 clients and as of September 2006 averaged over 900 client visits per month.
